The 4 Basic Elements of (Career) Success

We live in an instant gratification culture. For decades we’ve been able to run out in the middle of the night to any number of stores open 24-hours, and now with the technology revolution, can summon almost anything to our front door from the small screen in our hand and often without talking to a single other human.

We have so embraced these aspects of the larger culture that it can become a difficult paradigm to hold up when other areas of our lives are not similarly responsive. Our careers are one example.

Some people appear to have been kissed by the gods when it comes to their careers. We look on in admiration or envy and wonder what they did or who they knew that helped get them into such a sweet spot.

The first danger in that is that we never really know what it is that’s going on in their heads. They may be thrilled, and they may not, AND what thrills them may not even may our pulses tick upward. Comparisons are dangerous so we should avoid them as often as possible. If, however; we want to use someone else’s appearing good fortune as inspiration and are willing to do our own work, we can emulate their success in a way that works for us.

There are 4 elementary perspectives that undergird success in any endeavor but especially in our careers: willingness, openness, patience and commitment.
